🎇🎆🔥Happy 5th November🎇🎆🔥
Today is 5th November and we all know what that means: bonfires, fireworks, and parties round the bonfire, and we don’t care what the weather is doing. We get our warmth from the bonfire night food and the bonfire itself.
As a child, bonfire night was a different kettle of fish. There were very few displays, and the fireworks didn't cost an arm and a leg. They are stupid money nowadays.
I couldn't wait for my Father to come home from work, eat his tea, and we would go let the fireworks off. I loved it. We didn't have a garden, only a yard and a back alley, but all the kids from around about used to have fireworks, and there was a bonfire lit in the alleyway, and potatoes cooked in it. They were burnt, but we ate them and loved them.
Today, it is big money and a lot of displays, which I actually agree with, for safety and for enjoyment.
So much has changed. There used to be kids on the street with an old pram or cart showing off the guy they had made, and "penny for the guy" was a very common phrase in those days. Sadly, it was banned, like so much else, as it was classed as begging. Most kids put a lot of work into making those guys, and I'm not sure Dad gave us his clothes willingly or even knew about it!!
If a guy was well-made, the kids could earn a fair bit of loose change to spend on fireworks for their bonfire night celebrations.
Why we celebrate Guy Fawkes, I am not quite sure, when he intended to blow up the Houses of Parliament and those inside it!! But it’s fun, and if you can get together with some friends and make a small party of it, with some wine and food, it’s a good excuse for a party.
Please remember, though, that animals don’t like fireworks, so keep your pets indoors, and don't let fireworks off where there is livestock around.
Whether you celebrate it or not, please join us for some fireworks and fun.
