🐉🀄🐲Happy St. Georges Day🐉🀄🐲
Today is St. George’s Day, the Patron Saint of England, but I bet very few people are aware of that, and unlike the rest of the United Kingdom, which celebrates its Saint’s Day, the English don’t.
Here are some of the reasons:
Key Reasons Why St. George’s Day is Not Widely Celebrated:
No Public Holiday: England does not have a bank holiday for St. George’s Day, unlike Scotland (St. Andrew’s Day) and Northern Ireland (St. Patrick's Day), meaning many people are at work.
Lack of Personal Connection: St. George was not English; he was a Roman soldier of Greek origin who never visited Britain, leading to a weak cultural attachment compared to local saints like St. Edmund.
Protestant History: Historically, the Church of England did not emphasise Catholic saints, making the tradition less important compared to other countries.
Political Sensitivity: The St. George's Cross flag is sometimes associated with far-right political groups, causing some to avoid public displays.
Lack of Commercial Marketing: Unlike St. Patrick’s Day, there is no major commercial or marketing push (e.g., breweries) to promote large-scale celebrations.
In fact, the only Patron Saint in the UK who lived here is St. David, who was actually born in Wales !!
St George and the Dragon is purely a legend which became popular well after his death. It is symbolic of good winning over evil and not a historical event.
So, today, let’s celebrate St. George’s Day by posting all things relating to dragons, princesses and St. George and don’t forget "Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'" (Act 111 Scene 1 Henry V (1598))
