Hello there, it’s the time of year when the cobwebs in your house become Halloween decorations! 🤣
Yes, it’s time for all things spooky and fun.
Most people associate Halloween with America, but it originated in Ireland and was a festival called Samhain celebrated there and parts of the UK by the Celts over 2000 years ago. It marked the end of the harvest and the start of Winter on 1st November.
The celebrations have altered a lot since then, and has become very popular over here again in the last 10 years. It was believed that the boundary between the living and dead opened on 31st Oct. so people wore costumes and animal skins to avoid wandering spirits.
Before pumpkins became popular, faces were carved into turnips or other root veg to ward off evil spirits. We now use pumpkins, and they are called when carved etc. Jack-o-lantern in memory of Stingy Jack who robbed the devil and God wouldn’t allow him into heaven when he died, so he was condemned to wander the dark earth forever.
The shops in October will be full of pumpkins for you to carve, spooky decorations for your home, costumes, broomsticks, and witches hats, etc.
It has really turned into a money making enterprise now.
Sadly, one tradition I don’t agree with nowadays is Trick or Treat, where adults and kids dress up and go knocking on doors for a treat. It was a great idea years ago, but now some kids take it to extreme and get nasty if you don’t give them a treat.
Also in this day and age, people don’t want their bell rung at night cos you don’t know who it could be. Maybe it’s just me!!
So, today, let’s have some spooky fun, and maybe a bit of apple dunking later.
Post all things Halloween-related and there is a party here at 7.00 to celebrate the fun day.
