Days Of The Week
We have seven days in a week these days, but some ancient cultures had different numbers of days. In ancient Egypt, they had ten days in a week, while the Etruscans had eight.
“Eight Days A Week” is a Beatles song, and my eighth day would be Blursday, or Whensday, as I frequently don’t know where I am on any given day. Mostly because my daily routine is pretty fixed, and the only days that differ are when shopping comes first thing or our cleaner is here, but then she chops and changes her days too, which doesn’t help! 🤣
What actual day of the week it is rarely comes into it after that!
I suppose when we were in school or working in an office, etc. Monday would be the worst day, and Friday would be the one we looked forward to the most.
When I was a kid, Sundays were special because the shops were closed, there was hardly any traffic on the roads, and it was just a lovely, quiet and peaceful sort of day.
In the Outer Hebrides, the sabbath was very strictly observed when I was living there as a child. No work, other than essential services such as health care, and that included animals—the ox and ass of the Bible—and that included incomers—the stranger that is within thy gate—no matter what religion they may be. So, no riding horses, no hanging washing out, and some even considered recreational fishing “working”. Some even separated the male animals from the females, so no “how’s your father” on a Sunday either. We didn’t, and our animals seemed to know just when it was Sunday 😂
The village elder came round as soon as we moved in, and laid out the rules. As he was also my geography teacher and four other teachers lived in the village, I followed his instructions to the letter! 😅
It has been relaxed up there a little since then, but many, incomers included, are fighting to keep it as it was. I can actually understand that. Once that special day is lost, they would never get it back.
The weekend was named after Roman gods. The Romans initially associated each day with a celestial body and later adopted the practice of naming them after gods.
Saturday was named after the god and planet Saturn, and Sunday after the sun, obviously.
The Anglo-Saxons later renamed the other days of the week.
Monday was named for the moon.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were named after their gods and goddesses: Tyr, Woden, Thor and Frigga.
In the US, they call Wednesday “Hump Day”, which made me stare when I first heard that! 🤣
I feel sorry for poor old Monday getting such a bad rap!
It does have its good points, especially on a bank holiday Monday!
So, do you or did you have a favourite day of the week?
